SpaceX lifts endowments—especially one

2026-11-04 20:07

The University of North Carolina's exceptional fiscal 2026 returns trace back to a $2 million investment in SpaceX made in 2009 through Founders Fund, when Elon Musk's company was worth about $500 million, according to PitchBook data. SpaceX listed on Nasdaq in June, raising $86.25 billion at a $1.78 trillion valuation; UNC has sold about $1 billion of shares and still holds a stake worth more than $1 billion. The UNC Investment Fund, which also includes at least $4 billion in non-endowment capital, returned 37.8% in the fiscal year ended June 30, the highest reported so far among the 50 largest US endowments, lifting assets under management from $12.5 billion to around $17 billion. UNC Management Company president and CIO Stefan Strein told trustees that SpaceX accounted for about half of the performance, making the story a striking illustration of how a single early venture bet can dominate an institutional portfolio's year.

Contrarian Viewpoints

  • The result is a survivorship story: most early venture checks do not compound from a $500 million valuation to $1.78 trillion, and peers cannot replicate a 2009 SpaceX entry.
  • Concentration cut both ways: a single holding driving half of returns leaves the endowment exposed if SpaceX's public-market valuation corrects from its listing peak.

Investment Implications

  • For allocators, access to top-tier venture managers matters more than average asset-class returns, since one early position can dominate an endowment's year.
  • Treat SpaceX's public listing as a liquidity window rather than a valuation floor: the $1.78 trillion listing price sets a high bar for further upside.
